Series: Spirit – from The Bible series
Speaker: Paul
Key Passages: Acts 2:1–4 | 1 Corinthians 3:16
There is something deeply unsatisfying about a hot drink that arrives lukewarm. The form is present, but the heat—the very thing that gives it life—is missing.
As Paul shared on Sunday, God loves His church deeply, but He does not call us to be lukewarm. He calls us to be alive, passionate, and burning bright with the fire of the Holy Spirit.
The day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1–4) was the moment God lit a fire in the heart of human history. The Holy Spirit descended, and everything changed in an instant. Has that fire gone out in your life, or is it still burning?
The Fire Brings New Life
Genesis tells the story of how sin drained the color from human existence, turning what was meant to be vibrant into something marked by drudgery and dullness.
C.S. Lewis captured the beauty of Pentecost in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe when Aslan breathes over stone statues frozen by the White Witch, causing life to ripple back through them. This is what the Holy Spirit does. He does not simply upgrade an existing system.
“Being a believer is not a new life added on to an old life so that the old life gets a little bit better. It is NEW LIFE.”
The Fire Brings a New Presence
Throughout Scripture, fire is tied to the presence of God—from the burning bush with Moses to the pillar of fire in the wilderness. When tongues of fire descended at Pentecost, the message was unmistakable: God had come to live within His people.
Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 3:16 that believers are God’s temple. Wherever you go this week—into your workplace, difficult conversations, or seasons of pain—the presence of God goes with you. The refining fire of God’s presence does not abandon us in hard seasons; it prunes, strengthens, and transforms us.
The Fire Brings New Courage
Consider Simon Peter. Fifty days before Pentecost, he was cowering in fear, denying he even knew Jesus. But when the Spirit came, that same man stood before thousands to boldly proclaim the gospel.
“The Spirit of God came to loosen the tongues of these fearful men and women. Once they were tongue-tied, now as the Spirit comes, they are liberated.”
The Spirit is given to make us courageous. Most people God used in Scripture were remarkably ordinary, but filled with the Spirit, they stepped forward in faith.
“The early church filled with the Spirit, chose courage over fear, and they changed the world. We can do something very similar.”
Three Choices for the Week Ahead
Paul left us with three practical invitations to carry into our daily lives:
- Choose Life over Death: Reject spiritual apathy and step into the joy and vitality God provides.
- Choose Risk over Resignation: Refuse to settle for “this is how things have always been” and trust God with your next step.
- Choose Courage over Fear: You are backed by the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead.
