In a world filled with endless choices, from what to watch on TV to which cheese to buy at the grocery store, we often find ourselves paralyzed by indecision. But there’s one choice that stands above all others in its significance and impact on our lives – the choice to follow God’s path.
Jesus spoke of this choice in vivid terms, describing two roads that lie before us: a wide, easy path that many travel, and a narrow, difficult path that few find. This isn’t just a quaint metaphor; it’s a call to action, a challenge to make a decision that will shape our entire lives.
Throughout the Bible, we see examples of people faced with this pivotal choice. Joshua challenged the Israelites, “Choose this day whom you will serve.” Elijah confronted the people, asking them to decide between God and Baal. Ruth chose to follow Naomi, pledging her loyalty to her mother-in-law’s people and God. These weren’t casual decisions, but life-altering commitments.
The invitation to enter through the narrow gate is an invitation to embrace a life of purpose and meaning. It’s a call to respond to God’s voice – a voice that speaks of unconditional love, of a Son given for our sake, of sins forgiven, and of the constant presence of the Holy Spirit. This narrow path isn’t about finding an easy, picturesque trail through life. It’s about embarking on a journey that will challenge us, shape us, and ultimately lead us to true life.
Many of us might be content to simply attend church on Sundays, thinking that’s enough to classify us as followers of Christ. But the narrow path Jesus describes demands more. It calls us to be the salt of the earth, to go to the untasty and unpleasant places of the world. It challenges us to treat others as we wish to be treated – not just when it’s convenient, but always.
This path might lead us to stand up for the oppressed, to fight for justice, to make peace in the midst of conflict. It might put us at odds with authorities, neighbours, or even family members. But this is the exciting, dangerous, and ultimately fulfilling life that Jesus invites us into.
As we walk this path, we’re warned to be wary of false prophets – those who would lead us astray with teachings that sound good but ultimately detract from the true gospel. These might be prosperity preachers promising material blessings in exchange for faith, or those who place other causes – even good ones – above our primary focus on Jesus.
One powerful image to consider is that of Psalm 121. The psalmist looks to the mountains, where various altars to false gods stand. In our modern context, these “mountains” might represent success, popularity, material wealth, or anything else we’re tempted to worship. But the psalmist reminds us that our help comes not from these false altars, but from the Lord who made the mountains themselves.
Walking the narrow path is undoubtedly challenging. We may stumble, we may temporarily lose our way. But here’s the incredible promise: what God starts, He doesn’t abandon. If we’ve chosen to follow Him, He will see us through to the end. Just as Jesus calmed the storm and brought the disciples safely to the other shore, He will bring us through the trials and tribulations of life.
The apostle Peter beautifully captures this hope: “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time” (1 Peter 1:3-5, NIV).
This is the assurance we have – that our salvation will be completed. The narrow path leads to an imperishable inheritance, a hope that cannot be shaken.
So, how will you respond to this invitation? Perhaps you need to make a decision today to follow Jesus, to step onto this narrow path for the first time. Maybe you’ve been walking the path but have become complacent, and you need to recommit to living the exciting, upside-down life of the Kingdom. You might realize you’ve been looking to the wrong “mountains” for help, and it’s time to turn your eyes back to the Mountain-maker.
Whatever your situation, know that the choice is before you. It’s not always an easy choice – the narrow path is difficult, and it will cost you something. But it’s a path that leads to life in its fullest sense, a journey walked in the company of the God who loves you more than you can imagine.
Don’t put off this decision. Just as Joshua urged the Israelites to “choose this day,” the invitation stands before you now. Will you enter through the narrow gate? Will you commit to walking the path less traveled? The choice is yours, and it’s one that has eternal significance.
Remember, on this path, you’re never alone. The God who calls you to this journey is the same God who promises never to leave or forsake you. He’s the one who will complete the good work He’s begun in you. So step out in faith, embrace the adventure, and discover the life you were created to live.
