Day 1: The God of Encouragement
Reading: Romans 15:4-6
Devotional: As we begin this journey of encouragement, let’s reflect on the source of all true encouragement – God Himself. Paul reminds us that the Scriptures were written to teach and encourage us, giving us hope. Just as Barnabas knew his Bible and drew strength from it, we too can find endless encouragement in God’s Word. Today, meditate on how God has encouraged you through His Word in the past. How might you soak yourself more deeply in Scripture this week? Consider committing to reading through the entire Bible this year, allowing God’s encouragement to permeate every aspect of your life.
Day 2: Storing Up Heavenly Treasure
Reading: Matthew 6:19-21
Devotional: Barnabas understood his true inheritance, which allowed him to be generous with earthly possessions. Jesus teaches us to store up treasures in heaven rather than on earth. This shift in perspective frees us to be encouragers, focusing on eternal values rather than temporary gains. Reflect on areas where you might be holding too tightly to worldly things. How could loosening your grip on these allow you to encourage others more freely? Consider one practical step you can take today to invest in heavenly treasure by encouraging someone in need.
Day 3: The Character of Christ
Reading: Philippians 2:1-11
Devotional: Barnabas knew the character of Jesus and sought to emulate it. This passage beautifully illustrates Christ’s selfless, encouraging nature. He emptied Himself for our sake, the ultimate act of encouragement. As we seek to be ‘little Jesuses’, how can we cultivate this same mindset? Reflect on a situation where you can choose to put others first today. Ask the Holy Spirit to empower you to live out Christ’s character, especially in moments when it’s challenging.
Day 4: Filled with the Spirit
Reading: Acts 13:1-3
Devotional: Barnabas was known for being filled with the Holy Spirit, which enabled his ministry of encouragement. In this passage, we see Barnabas (along with others) being led by the Spirit in ministry. The same Spirit that empowered Barnabas is available to us today. Spend time in prayer, asking God to fill you afresh with His Spirit. Listen for His guidance on who you might encourage today. Remember, you don’t need to be a “specialist” to offer a word of encouragement or prophecy – simply be open to how the Spirit might use you.
Day 5: Mercy and Second Chances
Reading: Colossians 3:12-17
Devotional: Barnabas demonstrated encouragement through mercy, notably with John Mark and Paul. He saw potential where others saw failure. This passage calls us to clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience – all qualities of an encourager. Is there someone in your life who needs a second chance? How can you extend mercy and encouragement to them today? Reflect on how God has shown you mercy, and let that motivate you to be merciful to others. As you close this week’s devotional, commit to making this year one of intentional encouragement, following in the footsteps of Barnabas and ultimately, of Christ.
