Orbit Week – Week 7 – David is King

Orbit 2 week 7 – Part 1 – David is King

Read 2 Samuel 5:6-12

Sometimes there are really difficult parts of the Bible to read. This is one of them… yes, great David is a good king who wants to put God first – but what is this about people who can’t ‘walk or see’ being banned from the palace? It’s a tricky one and one the translators of the Bible admit is a tricky phrase to translate.

So what do we learn? Good to put Jesus first and to follow his example – which means people who can’t walk or see are put first!

Prayer  Pray for those you know who have a disability – pray they will know they are valued by God and pray for opportunities to show love & kindness.

Creative David made Jerusalem his special place. Can you make a space in your home a special place where you go to be alone with God?

In the morning we think about more things David did when he became king and what he learnt about God.

Orbit 2 week 7 – Part 2 – David is King

Are you ready for another really tricky bit of the Bible? This one is where we go really? Seems a bit harsh…

Read 2 Samuel 6:1-8

Here we have the joy and dancing of the procession with the sacred chest as it was brought back towards Jerusalem. There were songs and happiness – people dancing with all their might. And then when the oxen stumble, Uzzah reaches out to protect the precious chest – surely a good thing?

But no, this is against the law and Uzzah dies… it seems that Uzzah had broken God’s command about how holy the chest was…

We should remember that although we live in a time after Jesus and we know him as one who holds children in his arms, he is still a holy God who we should bow before.

As one person once said – God is All-mighty, not all matey!

Prayer God, help me to remember who you are and how you are a holy God. It is only because of Jesus I can come before you. Thank you, Jesus, I bow before you!

Creative Make a gift of some sort and write a label saying ‘do not touch’. See how long it is before someone touches it. Then talk about why you are not going to kill them as you share about how holy God is!

Orbit 2 week 7 – Part 3 – David is King

A lighter part of the Bible – this time about a king dancing like a fool!

Read 2 Samuel 6:13-22

After three months of the chest being not quite in Jerusalem – they went and got it. And David was so happy he danced and sang and leapt… when Saul’s daughter accuses him of being a fool (or whatever your Bible says) and David says “I am willing to be even more foolish for the Lord” (v22). Is that true for you? Are you willing to do whatever God wants you to do, even if you think it makes you look silly

Prayer God please help me to be foolish for you! To not take myself seriously, but to take you very seriously!

Creative Make a picture of something silly – and write on it your own version of verse 22…
