Orbit 24.1 – This week our passage begins with a difficult idea – do we really hate our parents and even our own life? No, it is just we should love Jesus more!
Read Luke 14:25-35
- What should be most important?
- What does it mean to carry your own cross?
- Why does Jesus talk about building a tower or going to war? What is it important to do first?
- What is Jesus saying we should be like as his followers?
Prayer – Lots to pray about today – pray for each other (or yourself)
Creative – Grab a selection of stuff – divide it up and see who can build the tallest tower. Knock it over declaring that Jesus is more important than anything you build!
Orbit 24.2 – Get ready to party – what is your favourite type? And what do you think parties will be like in heaven (clue: they will be better!)
Read Luke 15:1-10
- Note who were listening to Jesus (v1-2)
- What prompts these people to have a party? What prompts heaven to hold a big knees-up?
- Jesus seems to suggest the priority is to rescue and help others find their way home… is this your priority?
- What makes you rejoice?
Prayer – Pray for those you know who are ‘lost’.
Creative – Plan a party – the location, the theme, the food, the music, the guests etc etc…
Orbit 24.3 – Here we get to one of the most famous stories of all time. And first of all we look at two ways of getting it wrong!
Read Luke 15:11-32
- We will focus on various bits of the story this time and others at the beginning of next week.
- What does the younger son ask for? v12-13
- Where does living this way get him? V14-16
- Later on in the story the older brother reacts to the younger son coming home… (v28)
- How did he expect his Father to reward his slaving? Where is the love?
- Two ways to get it wrong… Jesus is saying you are either a ‘sinner’(v1) one who has received good gifts and ignored God or a ‘pharisee’ (v2) who only obeys to try and earn God’s reward. Neither of them are acting out of love and devotion….
Prayer – Pray for those who are living like either of the brothers…
Creative – What things can you do and get wrong? Who can do the most wrong things in 5 minutes? Talk about how not to get the most important thing wrong…
