“Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.”
Philippians 2:3-4 NLT
These verses are so relevant to every single one of us, despite our differences. Each of us has areas of our lives or times when we know we should put others before ourselves but have not. Or issues that we need to surrender.
Reflect and Repent: how does this apply to you?
The two greatest commandments were summarised by Christ as…
“Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’” Matthew 22:37-39 NLT
How does this relate back to the Philippians 2 passage?
Martin Saunders from Youthscape speaks of their vision for young people in this way: When we’re so focused on our own lives and concerns, it’s easy to forget that the world doesn’t revolve around us. … What we want to do is present faith as the centre-piece of [our] lives; the thing that makes sense of everything else. Our vision is to see Christian young people living with God at the centre of their lives. To set them in his orbit, not the other way around. Like satellites. This is how we want to be? Do we?
Read verses again!
To live out the verses for today we NEED to make sure we are orbiting Christ and not that we have let him be pushed to one side so we can spin in our own circles!
Draw a circle – and then another small circle orbiting the larger one. In the larger circle write or draw ways you would describe your LORD.
In the ‘orbit’ of your circle (the smaller one) write or draw issues you are facing in your life.
How close to the Lord are you now? Are you ‘on course?’
Write, draw, pray to respond
Lord I want my life to be anchored in you and to you. I surrender my thoughts, hopes and fears to you. Help me to know the delight of spinning around you.
