Group Discussion Guide: God is Closer Than You Think

Part 1: Men’s Discussion Questions

Focus: Closeness in daily work, overcoming mistakes, and intentional action.

  1. Everyday Closeness: The sermon describes God as wanting to dwell “right in the middle” of his people rather than remaining distant on a mountain. In what practical ways do you experience God’s closeness in your daily work, routine, or family life—and when does He feel far away?
  2. Substitutes for God: The Israelites grew impatient waiting for Moses and built a golden calf. In what subtle ways do we as men turn to substitutes (work, busyness, control, entertainment) when we grow impatient or forget what God has done for us?
  3. Bigger Grace: Exodus 34 describes God as “compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in love.” Which of these attributes do you find hardest to fully believe applies to you personally when you mess up?
  4. Drawing Near: James 4:8 says that if we draw near to God, He will draw near to us. What is one practical, deliberate step you can take this week to draw nearer to Him in your current season?

Part 2: Women’s Discussion Questions

Focus: Identity, God’s presence, vulnerability, and relational connection.

  1. God Dwelling Among Us: The sermon highlights how Jesus “pitched His tent right among us” (John 1:14). How does the reality of Jesus moving into our everyday, messy lives deepen your understanding of His closeness to you?
  2. Infinite Forgiveness: Using the picture of mistakes disappearing into an infinitely large container of God’s love (Romans 5), how does God’s infinite grace change the way you approach self-forgiveness and letting go of guilt?
  3. Comfort in Pain: Psalm 34:18 tells us that God is near to the brokenhearted, even when we feel too overwhelmed to pray. How has this truth spoken to you—or how can it help you support a friend going through deep pain or grief?
  4. Opening the Door: In Revelation 3:20, Jesus stands at the door and knocks, waiting to share a meal with us. What might it look like in practice to open that door more fully in your daily life, and what often gets in the way?

Part 3: Intergenerational Challenge (Bonus Question for Both Groups)

Relational Closeness: On Sunday, we touched knees/elbows and sat with people from different generations. How can our small groups and other gatherings intentionally build deeper relationships across generational lines in Cosham Baptist Church to reflect the closeness God desires for His family?
