5 Family Discussion Starters (Around the Table or in the Car)
- Fire Brings New Life (Acts 2:1–4) — From Cold to Warm:When fire lights up in a cold room, it instantly brings warmth, light, and energy. Paul reminded us that the Holy Spirit is like a fire that brings us to life!👉 What makes our house feel warm and full of joy? How can we ask the Holy Spirit to bring His warmth into our family this week?
- Choose Life Over “Grey” Days (1 Corinthians 3:16) — God Lives in You:Sometimes life can feel a bit dull, tiring, or grey. But God’s Spirit lives right inside us to give us fresh hope and joy, even on hard days.👉 When you’re having a tricky or tiring day, what is one way we can pause and ask the Holy Spirit to help us choose joy and life?
- Choose Risk Over Giving Up — Trying New Things with God:It’s easy to think, “I’ve always been shy” or “I could never do that.” But carrying the Spirit of God means we don’t have to stay stuck in old habits.👉 Is there something new or brave you feel God might be nudging you to try this week at school, work, or church?
- Choose Courage Over Fear (Acts 2:14) — Transformed Disciples:Before Pentecost, the disciples were hiding in a locked room because they were scared. But when the Holy Spirit came, they stepped outside and boldly shared God’s love!👉 What is one thing that sometimes makes you feel scared or worried? How does knowing the Holy Spirit is with you give you courage?
- Passionate & Alive — Sharing the Spark:A tiny spark can light up a whole room! The church isn’t meant to be lukewarm—it’s meant to be full of God’s love and shining brightly.👉 How can our family pass on a bit of God’s “fire” (His love, kindness, or encouragement) to a friend, classmate, or neighbor this week?
Big Creative Idea: The “Spark & Candle” Object Lesson
Best for: Sunday afternoon or a weekday dinner table
Length: 7–10 minutes
What you need:
- A flashlight (or a candle/lighter for an adult to hold safely)
- A piece of paper with “FEAR / DULL” written on one side and “COURAGE / ALIVE” on the other
- A Bible open to Acts 2:1–4
1. The Cold & Dark Room (2 Mins)
Turn off the main lights in the room or dim them. Show the piece of paper on the “FEAR / DULL” side.
- Ask: “Imagine trying to play a fun board game or read a book in a pitch-black room. How easy is that?” (Super hard and a bit scary!)
- The Link: Before Pentecost, the disciples were hiding in the dark, feeling afraid, scattered, and uncertain. Sometimes we can feel a bit like that too—dull, worried, or stuck.
2. The Fire Arrives (3 Mins)
Switch on the flashlight (or light the candle safely). Flip the paper over to show “COURAGE / ALIVE”.
- Read Acts 2:2–4 out loud:“Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit…”
- Explain:Paul’s message today reminded us to “Receive the Fire!” Fire changes things—it melts coldness, lights up the dark, and turns a quiet spark into something powerful. The Holy Spirit came upon those ordinary, frightened disciples and filled them with so much courage that they changed the world!
3. The 3 Choices Challenge (2 Mins)
In his sermon, Paul gave us three choices we can make every day because the Holy Spirit lives in us:
- Choose LIFE over being grey/dull.
- Choose RISK over giving up.
- Choose COURAGE over fear.
- Ask: “Which of those three choices do you want to ask the Holy Spirit to help you with most this week?”
4. Family Prayer (2 Mins)
Pass the flashlight (or sit around the candle) and have everyone place a hand out with open palms.
Prayer:
“Holy Spirit, thank You that You live in us and that You are like a fire that warms our hearts and lights up our path. Where we feel afraid, give us courage. Where we feel tired or dull, fill us with Your life. Help our family to shine brightly with Your love this week. Amen.”
