In a world often filled with negativity and challenges, the importance of encouragement cannot be overstated. The biblical figure Barnabas serves as a powerful example of what it means to be an encourager – someone who inspires, uplifts, and nurtures the faith of others. But what does it truly mean to “be a Barnabas” in our daily lives?
At its core, encouragement is about giving courage. It’s not merely offering nice words or compliments, but rather helping others find the strength and courage that comes from God. Throughout scripture, we find a recurring theme: “Have courage. Do not be afraid.” This message resonates because Jesus has overcome the world, conquering all that is evil and terrible.
Consider the story of Peter walking on water. It was Jesus’ encouragement that enabled Peter to step out of the boat and do the impossible. While Peter didn’t have inflatable shoes, he had something far more powerful – the Spirit of God with him. This is the essence of true encouragement: empowering others to rely on God’s strength and become more Christ-like in their journey of faith.
The early church provides a vivid illustration of the impact of encouragement. In the book of Acts, we read about a pivotal moment when the gospel began to spread beyond the Jewish community to the Gentiles. Barnabas was sent to investigate this new development in Antioch. Upon arriving, he was overjoyed to see the grace of God at work among the Gentile believers. His response? He “encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts.”
This act of encouragement wasn’t a casual pat on the back. The original language suggests a passionate plea, urging the believers to persevere in their faith. Barnabas recognized the importance of nurturing these new shoots of faith, much like a gardener tenderly cares for growing plants.
So how can we cultivate this spirit of encouragement in our own lives? Here are some practical ways to be a Barnabas:
- See the signs of growth: Train your eyes to notice the subtle ways God is working in people’s lives. It might be a colleague showing patience in a difficult situation or a friend demonstrating newfound wisdom. When you spot these signs, acknowledge them and praise God for His work.
- Listen deeply: Sometimes, the best way to see what God is doing in someone’s life is to truly listen to them. Ask the Holy Spirit for insight into people’s situations and the potential He sees in them.
- Make yourself available: Jesus was often interrupted in His ministry, yet He made time for those who needed Him. How encouraging is it when someone puts aside their plans to focus on you? Be that person for others.
- Practice generosity and good stewardship: Barnabas sold a field to support the church’s vision of caring for those in need. Consider how you can use your resources – whether material or spiritual – to encourage others and further God’s kingdom.
- Extend friendship: Look for those on the fringes and invite them into community. Many people come to faith through genuine friendships, and many more have their faith strengthened through these connections.
- Use Scripture: God’s Word is a powerful source of encouragement. Create a list of encouraging Bible verses that you can turn to when you need uplifting or when you want to encourage others.
- Grow your own character: Work on yourself, partnering with the Holy Spirit to become more like Jesus. Barnabas was described as “a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith.” While we’ll never be perfect, we can strive to lead lives dedicated to following God.
Being an encourager is like being a gardener of faith. We don’t make the plants grow, but we create the conditions for growth. We nurture, we water, we provide support. And over time, we get to witness the beautiful blossoming of faith in those around us.
It’s crucial to remember that this work of encouragement isn’t done in our own strength. We need to be continually filled with the Holy Spirit. As Paul writes in Ephesians 5:18, “be filled with the Spirit.” This isn’t a one-time event, but an ongoing process of yielding to God’s power working in and through us.
The impact of a life dedicated to encouragement can be profound. The passage in Acts tells us that through Barnabas’ ministry, “a great number of people were brought to the Lord.” When we encourage others in their faith journey, we participate in God’s mission to draw people to Himself.
As we go about our daily lives – in our communities, workplaces, and homes – let’s remember our calling to be encouragers. We have the opportunity to spread the message of Jesus not just through our words, but through lives that inspire others to discover Him for themselves.
In a world that can often feel discouraging, choose to be a Barnabas. Look for the seeds of faith God is planting around you. Nurture those seeds with words of encouragement, acts of kindness, and a steadfast commitment to pointing others towards Christ. As you do, you may find that your own faith grows stronger, your joy deepens, and you become a powerful instrument in God’s hands for bringing hope and transformation to those around you.
Let us pray for eyes to see the growth God is bringing about, for hearts full of encouragement to nurture that growth, and for the filling of the Holy Spirit to empower us in this vital ministry. May we, like Barnabas, be known as people full of the Holy Spirit and faith, whose lives draw others closer to the heart of God.
