Becoming a Barnabas – the power of listening – 5 Day devotional

Day 1: The Ministry of Listening

Reading: James 1:19-20

Devotional: In a world full of noise, God calls us to be quick to listen. Today’s passage reminds us that listening is not just a social skill, but a spiritual discipline. When we truly listen to others, we reflect God’s own attentiveness to His children. Consider how Jesus listened intently to those around Him, from the woman at the well to the disciples on the road to Emmaus. How might your relationships and witness change if you approached each conversation with the intent to listen first? Today, practice being “quick to listen, slow to speak” in your interactions. Ask God to help you hear not just the words, but the heart behind them.

Day 2: Hearing God’s Voice

Reading: 1 Samuel 3:1-10

Devotional: Samuel’s story teaches us the importance of recognizing and responding to God’s voice. Like Samuel, we too must learn to discern when God is speaking to us. This requires cultivating a habit of listening in prayer and through Scripture. Reflect on times when you felt God was speaking to you. How did you recognize His voice? How did you respond? Today, spend some time in silent prayer, asking God to speak to you. Be prepared to say, like Samuel, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” Remember, sometimes God speaks through unexpected sources – a friend’s advice, a challenging situation, or even a gentle prompting in your spirit.

Day 3: The Transformative Power of Listening

Reading: Luke 24:13-35

Devotional: The road to Emmaus story illustrates how listening can lead to transformation. As Jesus walked and talked with the disciples, their hearts were “burning within them.” When we truly listen – to God and to others – our hearts can be similarly transformed. Think about a time when really listening to someone changed your perspective or deepened your faith. How can you create more opportunities for such transformative listening in your life? Today, approach your conversations with an open heart, ready to be changed by what you hear. Ask God to give you ears to hear His truth, even in unexpected places.

Day 4: Listening in Times of Suffering

Reading: Job 2:11-13

Devotional: Job’s friends initially responded to his suffering with silent presence – they sat with him for seven days without speaking. While they later faltered with poor advice, their initial response teaches us the power of attentive listening in times of pain. When others are suffering, our presence and willingness to listen can be more healing than any words we might offer. Reflect on times when someone’s listening presence comforted you in difficulty. How can you offer that same gift to others? Today, if you know someone who is hurting, reach out to them. Offer your presence and a listening ear, trusting that God can work through your silent support.

Day 5: Listening as an Act of Love

Reading: 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Devotional: Paul’s description of love in 1 Corinthians 13 doesn’t explicitly mention listening, but many of love’s qualities – patience, kindness, not being self-seeking – are embodied in the act of truly listening to another. When we listen with our full attention, we communicate value and respect to the speaker. This is a profound act of love. Consider how God listens to us with perfect love and patience. How can you reflect this divine love in your own listening? Today, choose one person to listen to with your full attention and love. Pray for God’s love to flow through you as you listen, setting aside your own agenda and truly hearing their heart.
