Orbit 2 Week 8 – Part 1 – Solomon
We move onto David’s son – Solomon – he began life as Israel’s king really well – let’s take a look at the beginning.
Read 1 Kings 3:3-9
Notice how he thanks God for his faithfulness.
And he asks God for understanding or wisdom… it is important to know who God is or what he is like – but it is only when we understand what it means can we apply it to our lives and it makes a difference. It is like the good soil in Jesus’ parable. For those with no understanding are like the path – where the birds snatch away… (see Mark 4:2-9)
Prayer Give thanks to God for his faithfulness and ask for the desire to understand and apply!
Creative Can you make a chart where you add ‘things I understand’ each day? e.g. I understand why it is important to look both ways before crossing a road, I understand why the moon makes tides, I understand what difference it makes to my life knowing that God is always faithful.
Orbit 2 Week 8 – Part 2 – Solomon
Solomon has been busy being wise and building a temple! And now a festival – we are coming up to a popular festival for many (on 31st Oct) – but the Bible has bigger and better festivals! Read about one that Solomon celebrated…
Read 1 Kings 8:65-9:3
Note how long the festival lasted? Can you have a celebration thanking God for his love and protection? Taking time to pray God’s forgiveness and blessing – but also celebrating and dancing and singing and eating?
Note how the temple was accepted by God.
Prayer Lord, help me to be a person who celebrates – I choose now to celebrate your love to me!
Creative Can you plan for a 7 day festival? A different way you will celebrate, either on your own or with friends… perhaps use half term / second week of half term…
Orbit 2 Week 8 – Part 3 – Solomon
Many of you will know Dave Rogers – a man who has been a leader at CBC and still is a great friend to many. His main hope for the last 20 years has been that he will finish well… that he won’t drift from following God as he gets older.
Read 1 Kings 11:1-6 to see what happened to Solomon
What had Solomon told the people not to do? What did he do? What was the result?
What could turn your heart away from the Lord? What is beginning to turn your heart away from the Lord?
Prayer Lord, help me to stay faithful – even into my old age.
Creative Can you play with some magnets and think of the people, activities and habits that attract you to God and those that turn you away from God.
