7 DAYS of PRAYER – Day 2 – Monday 1st January 

My dear old Grandpa had various strange sayings in life and one of his favourites was ‘Love will pull you further than gunpowder could blow you’….I am not sure of the origins or theology of such a statement! But this did remind me of the wonderful verses from Jeremiah 31 where God promised to establish a new covenant with His people.

Jeremiah 31:3

‘The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying:

I have loved you with an everlasting love, I have drawn you with unfailing kindness’.

So what draws you towards a person? Looks? GSOH? Healthy bank balance? Their kindness?

And what draws us to God, or back to God? The strength and depth of God’s love is shown in Jesus coming to earth and heading to the cross. He endured insults, disbelief, betrayal, cruelty beyond measure, and was killed to bear the weight of my sin.

What sort of kindness is this? God didn’t wait for an apology from mankind for all our evil and wayward behaviour. He took the initiative by reaching down to earth, to me, in Jesus His only Son. 

When did I last sit and consider this everlasting love and unfailing kindness that draws me to the Father and enables me to be a child of God?

In this New Year season, with the Christmas season of goodwill behind us, let’s focus on the everlasting and unfailing love and kindness of our God. He wants to draw us back to himself afresh, and to draw all men and women to know him as their Father. Our job is to thank Him and to share this love with all we meet so that they too will be drawn to God the Father, Jesus his Son and the Holy Spirit who enables the miracle of faith to begin for the first, or the thousandth time.
