Orbit 1.1

It’s a flying start from Luke. He explains why he’s writing this essay and then jumps straight into the story – although Jesus does not get a mention for a bit!

Read Luke 1 verses 1-4 – (no links, as it would be good for you to find a Bible you can use – or of course you could download an app. I will be using the Good News Translation.)

  • Why did Luke do this investigation?
  • What is the difference between full truth and almost truth and not much truth?
  • What can you do to take seriously the words you read in the Bible?

Prayer – thanking God for the Bible which helps us to learn about Jesus.

Creative – why not get hold of a notebook and decorate it this week. Then in this book you can write or draw things you have learnt and things you have prayed about.

Orbit 1:2

We meet an old couple who had given up on having kids – but it seemed God had other plans.

Read Luke 1 verses 5-17

  • Why was the angel’s news so surprising (look again at verse 7 and verse 13)
  • What would John be like (verses 14 & 15)
  • And what would he do? (verses 16 & 17)

Their son would become a great and godly man who would bring many Jews back to serving God. He would make them ready for King Jesus

Prayer – that we would be  more ready for King Jesus and for him to speak to us – in surprising ways and normal ways

Orbit 1:3

Luke now writes about how Elizabeth and Zecheriah had different responses

Read Luke 1 verses 18-25

  • Why was Zecheriah struck dumb (verse 20)
  • How did Elizabeth react differently (but what was also similar?) (verse 24)
  • “Now at last the Lord has helped me” (verse 25) – how has the Lord helped you?

Prayer – that we would take God’s word seriously and act upon it.  Thank God for working in lives and making us his daughters and sons, so like Elizabeth we don’t have any disgrace.

Creative – can you share an image of your decorated notebook? Add it as a comment
